Solution of Silver of White Light
This series of artworks makes durable some ephemeral moments of personal transformation from experience of place, play, and personal connection. These artworks value intuition, non-rational knowledge, empiric knowledge, and place attachment. My work refutes the colonial, Western, objective and quantitative, perspective of knowledge.
The title of this series plays off the name of Solution of Sulphur of White Light, one of the steps listed in Samuel Norton’s alchemical texts representing personal and spiritual transmutation and individuation. Silver nitrate, dye washes and video are used to create a saturated alchemy of image and material. Sunlight, salt and fire are used to speed a change in the silver, analogous to personal transformations.
